If Chemistry feels like an endless list of facts to memorise, you are studying it the hard way, and the fragile way. Memorised facts with no understanding underneath blur together under exam pressure and collapse the moment a question is phrased unfamiliarly. Understanding does the opposite: it lets you work out an answer you cannot directly remember, and it makes the facts far easier to retain because they hang on a reason. This article is about that shift, from storing Chemistry to actually understanding it.
Understanding means you can rebuild it
Here is a simple test of the difference. If you forget a memorised fact, it is gone. If you forget something you understand, you can reconstruct it from what you know. A student who has only memorised that molten sodium chloride conducts electricity is stuck if the question changes. A student who understands it reasons: ionic compounds are made of charged ions held in a rigid lattice; when solid, the ions cannot move; when molten or dissolved, the ions are free to move and carry charge. That reasoning also answers a dozen related questions the memoriser never prepared for. Understanding is memory you can regenerate.
Always ask “why” one more time
The habit that builds understanding is relentlessly asking why. Do not stop at what happens; chase the reason underneath it.
- Why does an atom form ions? Because it gains or loses electrons to reach a stable, full outer shell, the same reason across the whole chemical bond chapter.
- Why is a magnesium ion Mg2+ and not Mg+? Because magnesium has two electrons in its outer shell and loses both to become stable, leaving a 2+ charge.
- Why does reactivity increase down Group 1? Because the outer electron is further from the nucleus and more easily lost.
Each “why” links a fact to a cause, and causes are what make Chemistry a system rather than a pile. Most of the syllabus rests on a few big ideas, the structure of the atom, the drive toward stable electron arrangements, the transfer or sharing of electrons, and once those ideas are solid, huge stretches of content start to explain themselves. That is why matter and the atomic structure is worth truly understanding early: almost everything later leans on it.
Build a mental picture, not just a sentence
Chemistry happens to particles you cannot see, so understanding means being able to picture what the particles are doing. When you read that a reaction is faster at higher temperature, do not just memorise the sentence, see it: particles moving faster, colliding more often and harder, so more collisions succeed. When you learn that an acid is “a substance that ionises in water to produce hydrogen ions,” picture the molecules splitting apart in water and releasing H+ ions. A fact you can visualise is a fact you understand; a fact you can only recite is one you have memorised. Drawing a rough particle diagram as you study forces this picture into place.
Use the “explain it to a twelve-year-old” test
The fastest way to find out whether you truly understand something is to try to explain it simply, out loud, without your notes. If you can teach why an ionic compound conducts only when molten, in plain words, to someone who has never studied Chemistry, you understand it. If you find yourself reaching for textbook phrases you cannot unpack, you have found the exact edge of your understanding, and that edge is precisely what to study next. This “teach it back” habit turns vague familiarity into a clear map of what you do and do not actually grasp.
Where memorising still has its place
None of this means memorising is useless. Some things simply have to be known cold: the exact wording of definitions the mark scheme rewards, the colours of ions and precipitates, the gas tests, specific formulae. The point is not to abandon memory but to build it on top of understanding, so the facts have somewhere to stick. When understanding will not come from a book
