An A+ in SPM Chemistry is not won by memorising more than everyone else. It is won by understanding the chemistry, answering in the exact way the marking scheme rewards, and refusing to give away easy marks. This guide sets out the habits that separate a top grade from a good one, and where students most often trip up along the way.

Understand the whole syllabus, not just the “big” chapters

Chemistry (KSSM, code 4541) is examined across Form 4 and Form 5, 8 chapters in Form 4 and 5 chapters in Form 5. An A+ candidate has no blind spots. The paper can draw a structured question from any chapter, so a single neglected topic such as electrochemistry or the mole concept can cost the grade. Work through every chapter systematically using the Form 4 syllabus and Form 5 syllabus, and treat any chapter you “hope won’t come out” as the one to master first.

Aim for genuine understanding, not surface recall. If you can explain why a reactive metal displaces a less reactive one, you can answer a dozen versions of that question; if you only memorised one example, you are stuck the moment the numbers change.

Master the three papers on their own terms

The exam has three papers, and each rewards a different skill. Paper 1 is an objective paper of 40 questions in 1 hour 15 minutes; Paper 2 is a written paper of 100 marks in 2 hours 30 minutes with structured and essay-style sections; and Paper 3 assesses your practical and science-process skills. Precision is where A+ marks live

The gap between an A and an A+ is almost always precision. The marking scheme awards marks for specific words, correct units, balanced equations and state symbols, not for the general idea. Build these habits now:

  • Balance every equation and add state symbols, for example Zn(s) + H₂SO₄(aq) → ZnSO₄(aq) + H₂(g).
  • Write ionic equations when asked, for example neutralisation as H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l).
  • Always show working and carry units through a calculation. Using the molar volume 24 dm3 mol−1 at room conditions, 240 cm³ of a gas is 0.240 ÷ 24 = 0.01 mol.
  • Answer the command word. “State” wants a fact; “explain” wants a reason; “compare” wants both similarities and differences.

Keep an error log

Every A+ student I have taught kept some form of mistake list. After each practice paper, write down every mark you lost and why: a wrong formula, a missing state symbol, a misread graph, a unit dropped. Review the list before the next paper. Within a few weeks the same errors stop repeating, because you have made them visible instead of hoping to remember.

Careless mistakes are not bad luck, they are a skill deficit you can fix. Read every question twice, underline the command word and the substance named, and check that your final answer actually responds to what was asked.

Practise under real conditions

Knowing the content is not the same as performing under time pressure. In the final phase of revision, sit complete past-year papers to the clock, mark them honestly against the scheme, and time yourself so you never run out of minutes on the last question. Support this with targeted drilling: work through the chemistry calculations until the mole, concentration and energy sums are automatic, and revise the key named reactions so equations and observations come to you instantly.

Look after the student, not just the syllabus

An exhausted brain does not recall chemistry well. Sleep, short focused sessions, and steady spaced review beat frantic all-nighters every time. Confidence comes from evidence, from seeing your own marked papers improve, so start early enough that improvement is visible.
