How to earn method marks even when you get the wrong answer

Here is a fact that changes how you should write every calculation in SPM Chemistry: a wrong final answer does not have to score zero. Longer calculation questions are marked in steps, and most of those marks are for the method, the formula, the substitution, the correct process, not just the final number. A student who shows clear working and slips at the very end can still take most of the marks. A student who writes only the wrong final answer takes nothing. This post shows you how to write calculations so the examiner can reward every correct step you made.

How calculation marks are actually split

A four-mark calculation is almost never “four marks for the right answer.” It is closer to one mark for the correct formula, one for substituting the right values, one for carrying out the working, and one for the final answer with its unit. That means three of the four marks live in the working, and they are yours regardless of the last number, if the examiner can see them. Error carried forward: your safety net

The most important rule to know is “error carried forward,” often shortened to ECF. If you make a mistake early in a calculation but then apply every following step correctly to your wrong value, the examiner awards the later method marks anyway. You are marked on whether your process was right, not on whether an early slip poisoned the final number.

But ECF only works if the working is visible. If you do the middle steps in your head or on the question paper and write only the final answer, there is nothing for the examiner to follow, and one early slip takes the whole question down with it. Showing your working is not neatness for its own sake, it is what unlocks ECF.

A worked example

Consider: “Calculate the mass of magnesium oxide formed when 6 g of magnesium burns completely in oxygen. [Ar: Mg = 24, O = 16]”

Written properly, the answer looks like this:

  • Equation: 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO
  • Moles of Mg = mass / Ar = 6 / 24 = 0.25 mol
  • Mole ratio Mg : MgO = 2 : 2 = 1 : 1, so moles of MgO = 0.25 mol
  • Mass of MgO = moles × Mr = 0.25 × 40 = 10 g

Now suppose a student misremembers and uses Ar of Mg as 12. Their first line becomes moles of Mg = 6 / 12 = 0.5 mol. Their final answer is 0.5 × 40 = 20 g, wrong. But look at what they still did correctly: they knew moles = mass / Ar, they used the right 1 : 1 ratio, and they used the correct Mr of MgO (40). Because the working is on the page, the examiner can award the marks for the ratio and the final mass step under ECF. One error, one mark lost, not four. Had the student written only “20 g,” they would have scored zero.

Write every calculation in three visible lines

Turn this into a habit so it happens under pressure. For any calculation, write:

  1. The formula, in symbols, moles = mass / molar mass, or concentration = moles / volume, before any numbers.
  2. The substitution, showing the actual values going in.
  3. The answer, with its unit.

Small habits that protect method marks

  • Carry units through the working. A unit on each line helps the examiner follow your method and helps you catch a step that has gone wrong dimensionally.
  • Do not rub out a whole calculation. If you spot a mistake, cross out one line and rewrite it. Erasing everything can delete the very working that would have scored under ECF.
  • Never leave a calculation blank. Even if you cannot finish, write the formula and substitute what you can. A correct formula alone often scores a mark; a blank scores nothing.
  • Keep full precision until the last line. Round once, at the end, to a sensible number of significant figures, usually three, so a rounding slip mid-way does not cost you the answer mark.

Method marks are not only for calculations

The same principle reaches beyond numbers. In a balancing question, a correct but unbalanced equation may still earn something for correct formulae. In an ionic equation, showing the correct ions can score even if the balancing is off. In an essay, each valid point scores on its own, so a partly-right answer is never worthless. The lesson is the same everywhere on the paper: put your reasoning on the page, because the examiner can only reward what they can see.
