Chemical equations appear in almost every part of SPM Chemistry, from Paper 1 objectives to the long calculations in Paper 2. Yet most equation marks are lost the same handful of ways. The good news is that every one of these errors is a habit, and habits can be retrained in an afternoon. Here are the slips we correct most often, and the small checks that fix each for good.
1. Getting the formula wrong before you even balance
A balanced equation built on a wrong formula is still wrong. The commonest cause is guessing a formula instead of building it from the charges of the ions. Sodium chloride is NaCl, not NaCl2, because Na+ and Cl− combine one-to-one. Aluminium oxide is Al2O3 because Al3+ and O2− must balance to zero overall. Before you write any equation, be sure each formula is correct on its own. If ionic formulae still feel shaky, work through the Mole Concept, Formula and Equation chapter until building them from charges is automatic.
2. Forgetting that seven elements are diatomic
Hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and the halogens do not exist as lonely atoms in their free state. Writing H + Cl → HCl is wrong; it is H2(g) + Cl2(g) → 2HCl(g). Remember the diatomic seven, H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, I2, and the balancing usually falls into place. Combustion questions punish this constantly: oxygen is always O2.
3. Leaving the equation unbalanced
An unbalanced equation loses its own mark and wrecks any calculation built on it. After writing one, count each element on both sides. For methane combustion, CH4(g) + 2O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2H2O(l): one carbon each side, four hydrogens each side, four oxygens each side. Adjust only the big numbers in front (coefficients), never change a subscript inside a correct formula to force a balance, because that changes the substance itself.
4. Dropping the state symbols
In SPM, state symbols (s), (l), (g) and (aq) are frequently worth a mark of their own, especially in ionic equations. H+(aq) + OH−(aq) → H2O(l) earns the state-symbol mark; the same line without them may not. Make writing the state symbol part of writing each formula, not an afterthought.
5. Confusing the arrows
Use a single arrow for a reaction that goes to completion, and the reversible arrows for equilibrium. A reversible reaction such as the Haber process is written with the equilibrium sign, not a plain arrow. Using the wrong arrow signals the wrong chemistry and can cost the mark in an equilibrium question.
6. Writing ionic equations that do not balance for charge
Ionic equations must balance twice: for atoms and for total charge. In Zn(s) + Cu2+(aq) → Zn2+(aq) + Cu(s), the charge is +2 on each side and every atom is accounted for. Two frequent slips: keeping spectator ions that take no part (leave them out), and forgetting that the charges themselves must add up. Precipitation is clean when you keep only the reacting ions: Ag+(aq) + Cl−(aq) → AgCl(s). 7. Botching half-equations
Half-equations trip students because they need electrons to balance the charge. At the cathode, copper is deposited by Cu2+(aq) + 2e- → Cu(s); at the anode, chloride is oxidised by 2Cl−(aq) → Cl2(g) + 2e-. Balance the atoms first, then add electrons to whichever side needs them so the charges match. Count the electrons, a half-equation with the wrong number of electrons is a certain lost mark.
8. Silly transcription errors under time pressure
Finally, the avoidable ones: copying SO4 as SO3, dropping a bracket in Ca(OH)2, or losing a coefficient between two lines of working. These cost as many marks as the conceptual errors, and they cluster in the last, rushed minutes of a paper. Slow down for the final read-through.
