How important is Chemistry for TVET and diploma routes?

What TVET and diploma routes are

TVET covers hands-on, skills-focused programmes offered by polytechnics, community colleges, vocational colleges, industrial training institutes and many private providers. A diploma is a qualification level often reached through these institutions, typically taking two to three years, and it can lead straight into employment or on to a degree later. The appeal is clear: you learn a trade or a profession by doing, and you enter the workforce sooner.

Where Chemistry genuinely matters

For science- and health-related diplomas, Chemistry is important and sometimes required. Fields where it carries real weight include:

• Pharmacy and pharmacy-related diplomas, dispensing, drug names and actions all rest on chemistry.
• Medical laboratory technology, you work with reagents, reactions and analysis daily.
• Food science and food technology, preservation, additives and quality testing are applied chemistry. Much of this connects to manufactured substances in industry.

Where Chemistry matters much less

Be equally honest the other way. For many TVET and diploma routes, Chemistry is not central at all. Programmes in areas such as accounting and business, information technology, graphic design, culinary arts, hospitality, early childhood education, mechanical or civil trades, and many others place little or no weight on it. For these fields, a broad set of SPM credits matters more than Chemistry specifically, and it would be wrong to tell you otherwise.
