Engineering students often ask us this because, unlike medicine, the answer is genuinely “it depends.” Some engineering fields are built on chemistry; others lean far more on physics and mathematics, with chemistry playing a supporting role. Getting the nuance right helps you make a smart subject choice at SPM without dropping something you may later need. Here is the honest, discipline-by-discipline picture, and why, if you are unsure which engineering field you want, keeping Chemistry is the safe bet.
The short answer: it depends on the discipline
Engineering is not one subject; it is a family of very different fields. For some, Chemistry is essential. For others, it is useful background rather than a strict prerequisite, and Physics with Additional Mathematics does the heavy lifting. Let us split them up.
Where Chemistry is essential
Some branches of engineering are chemistry through and through:
- Chemical engineering is the obvious one, it is literally about designing and running processes that transform materials chemically, from petrochemicals to pharmaceuticals to food processing. Reaction rates, equilibrium and energy changes, exactly the ideas in the SPM chapters on rate of reaction and thermochemistry, are its daily bread.
- Materials engineering rests on understanding why substances behave as they do, which is bonding and structure at heart.
- Environmental and process engineering deal with reactions, pollutants and treatment chemistry constantly.
- Petroleum and polymer-related engineering are built on the chemistry of hydrocarbons and large molecules.
If you are drawn to any of these, Chemistry is not optional, take it seriously at SPM. The Manufactured Substances in Industry chapter, with its Contact and Haber processes, alloys and composites, is a small preview of the industrial chemistry these fields build on.
Where Physics and Maths lead, and Chemistry supports
For many of the largest engineering fields, mechanical, electrical and electronic, civil, aerospace, and software or computer engineering, the core is Physics and Mathematics, especially Additional Mathematics. Forces, motion, circuits, structures and computation are their language. Chemistry is still valuable, materials selection, corrosion, batteries and combustion all involve it, but it usually plays a supporting role rather than being the central science.
That does not mean you can safely drop it, though. Two important cautions.
First, many engineering programmes still list Chemistry among their required or recommended SPM subjects, even for mechanical or electrical routes, because a broad science base is expected. Whether a particular programme requires it varies.
Second, your foundation programme may include Chemistry regardless. STPM, Matriculation and Foundation-in-Engineering routes often carry Chemistry as part of the science package, so you may end up studying it anyway at pre-university level, much easier if your SPM base is solid.
The honest caveat on requirements
Here is the part it would be wrong to fudge. The exact SPM subject and grade requirements for an engineering programme vary by discipline, by university, and from year to year. One university’s civil engineering intake may ask for a different combination than another’s, and requirements are reviewed regularly.
So do not decide based on a specific requirement you saw in a forum or heard from a senior. Always confirm the current requirements directly from:
- the university or college’s own admissions page for that specific engineering programme,
- the relevant accreditation or professional-engineering channels in Malaysia,
- and, for public-university intake, the UPU channels.
Treat any number quoted unofficially as a rough guide and verify it. Requirements change, and engineering has enough sub-fields that a general rule will not fit every case.
The safe strategy if you are undecided
Here is the practical wisdom. Most students choosing subjects at the start of Form 4 do not yet know which engineering field they will pursue, or even whether they will end up in engineering at all. In that situation, keeping Chemistry is the low-risk choice, because:
- it keeps chemical, materials and environmental engineering open, which dropping it would close;
- it is commonly listed among required or recommended subjects across engineering routes;
- and it strengthens the broad science literacy that every engineer uses.
