Plenty of Malaysian students spend a serious slice of every day just getting to and from school. If you are on a KTM Komuter into KL, a school bus that loops half the taman before it reaches you, or a car ride from a kampung to the nearest secondary school, an hour each way is normal, and two hours a day is not unusual. That is roughly ten hours a week gone before you have opened a single book. When Chemistry is one of your harder subjects, that lost time hurts. This post is about getting some of it back without burning yourself out.

Be honest about what the commute actually costs

The commute does not only cost minutes; it costs energy. A student who leaves home at 6:20 a.m. and gets back at 4 p.m. is already tired before homework starts. So the goal is not to cram Chemistry into every spare second, that just ensures you arrive home fried. The goal is to match the right kind of study to the state you are in. Travelling on a bumpy bus is a bad time to attempt titration arithmetic; it is a fine time to review ideas you have already met. Sort your Chemistry revision into “needs a desk” and “can be done anywhere”, and the commute stops feeling like pure waste.

What works on the move

A moving bus or train is best for recall, not writing. Try these:

  • Paper 1 style questions on your phone. Objective questions suit small screens and short bursts. Working through a handful of multiple-choice items each trip keeps definitions and simple calculations warm. Our overview of the SPM Chemistry papers explains what Paper 1 rewards so you practise the right way.
  • Flashcards you made yourself. Ion charges, colours of precipitates, the reactivity series, gas tests, these are pure memory and perfect for a ten-minute leg of the journey.
  • Listening. Record yourself reading out a tricky definition or a set of electrode half-equations, then replay it with earphones. Hearing your own voice explain redox is more useful than it sounds.

Keep it light and repetitive. Five minutes of retrieval, done daily on the way home, beats one heavy weekend session you dread.

What to leave for a desk

Some Chemistry genuinely needs a flat surface and a clear head: mole calculations, balancing equations, drawing energy level diagrams, and full Paper 2 answers where you must show working. Do not force these onto a jolting commute, you will make careless slips and lose confidence. Guard a short, protected block at home for them instead, even if it is only 30 focused minutes.

Protect your evening energy

The biggest risk of a long commute is that it steals the hours when your brain is freshest. Two habits help. First, front-load the hard subject. If Chemistry is your weak point, do it early in your home block, not at 10 p.m. when you are running on fumes. Second, plan realistic hours. Map your real week, travel, school, meals, prayers, rest, and see how much genuine study time is left before you promise yourself the impossible. Our study-hours calculator does exactly this, so your timetable is built on the time you actually have, not the time you wish you had.

Use the weekend to consolidate, not to panic

Because weekday evenings are short, treat weekends as your consolidation window. This is when you sit at a desk and do the deep work: a timed set of past-paper questions, a full essay answer, the calculations you flagged during the week. Little-and-often on weekdays keeps the material alive; the weekend is where it gets locked in. Aim for one solid Chemistry session each weekend rather than a frantic all-day marathon that leaves you drained for Monday.

Where a tutor can save you a second journey

Here is a quiet advantage of online lessons for a long-commute student: you do not add a second commute to a tuition centre on top of the first. Many Malaysian families drive their child across town in the evening for physical tuition, another 40 minutes each way, after an already long day. Our lessons are online and one-to-one, so the “travel” is walking to your desk and logging in. That reclaimed time and energy goes straight back into revision or rest.

If Chemistry is the subject dragging your average down, a focused hour with a teacher who explains the exact step you keep missing can replace several unfocused hours alone. Our experienced SPM Chemistry teachers each have around fifteen years of experience, and you can see how sessions run on our how it works page. Lessons are in English, from RM50 an hour, with a paid one-hour trial so you can judge the fit before committing.

A long commute is a real constraint, not an excuse, and once you plan around it honestly, it stops being the reason Chemistry slips and becomes just another thing you have managed well.
